From Anita Brozik, VP/Programs

Hello fellow quilters. . . .

It’s that time again! This month we are traveling to Hutchinson for the program. Karna Lackey, the owner of Sew In 2 Quilts, located at 126 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS, is sharing how she does scalloped and shaped borders on the longarm as well as a trunk show of her national quilt winners.

The quilt store will open at 9:30 AM for us to explore, browse, and check out all the wonderful treasures at Sew In 2 Quilts. The program starts at 10 AM. Everyone attending from KLQ (members & visitors) will receive an in store coupon.  Questions, please contact me.

Karna shared that she has sewn since she was a small child. As she became more skilled, she mostly sewed garments but changed to quilting when she started teaching classes at the local Bernina dealership. There she taught machine guide classes and free motion quilting as well as other quilting classes. Karna opened Sew In 2 Quilts shop in 2019 while still working full time. Also in 2019, Karna purchased the historic Whiteside building where the quilt shop presently resides. She retired in July 2021 after 38 years at Data Center, Inc. Now at the quilt shop full time, Karna is remodeling the second floor of the building for a classroom and hopefully a day retreat venue.

As the climate of the pandemic is changing, our bus trip is tabled for now. The business portion of our meeting for this month is also canceled, as there are several places to shop in and around Hutchinson. This may become our “shop hop” event for the year!

We all have special places that we shop in the Hutchinson area, but listed below are a few of my (Anita’s) favorite haunts (you can tell my favorites – fabrics, food, & faith, fun, lol). This listing also includes hometown main street eateries. (might have a mask in your auto).

Shopping

ET Cetera Shop, 22 N. Main (about a block south of Sew In 2 Quilts): Thrift store in 2 buildings, over 1/2 of 1 building is fabric. Rumor has it that when the 2020 Mennonite sale at the fairgrounds was canceled all their goods were donated to Etc. Might be worth a look! Newton, Yoder & Hillsboro also have an Et Cetera Shop but mostly a thrift shop.

Prairie Point Fabric, 7 E. Sherman (block east of Main): Short hours at 12- 1pm, M-F 2-6pm

Smith’s Market, 211 S. Main: Mon-Sat 7 AM – 6 PM; Family owned since 1933, a step into the past in this specialtyfood, produce, bulk candy, store.

Note: general fabric store on Main, east side of the street, south of Karna’s shop that sold all types of fabric. Barrangers mentioned it at our Feb/April meeting and I stopped there 1-2 years ago but neither of us can remember the name.

Country Fabrics, Pleasantview, KS (5 miles SW of Hutch on Hwy 50), M-Sat, 9:30 to 5 PM: Half the store is quilt fabric, other half clothing fabric. 108” wide quilt backing= $10.98 a yd.

Glen’s Bulk Food & Book Store, Pleasantview, KS: M-F 9-6 PM, Sat 9-5 PM; Same strip mall as Country Fabrics. Just to browse is an adventure! Deli, bakery, gifts, knives, other unique & uncommon items for cooking bulk foods to cook or snack.

R & E Country Store, 12304 Obee Road, Haven, KS (Yoder area); If you have ever visited Anna’s Variety Store east of Yoder you will love this shop. Short hours on Sat with our meeting at 10: Sat 8:30AM – 12Noon. Mon, Wed, Thurs & Fri. 8:30 to 4 PM. Closed Tues & Sun. Fabric, batting, sewing supplies, gifts, Bibles, toys, kitchen supplies, garments, etc. 620-465-2733.
