January 2021 – A Fresh Start

Here’s crossing our fingers that 2021 will be a year of positive inspiration for all of us. Last year, the pandemic kept us apart most of the time, but hopefully that gave folks a chance to catch up on some quilting backlog!!

KLQ did hold two in-person meetings in 2020. The first was in February, before the Covid-19 pandemic started hitting hard, and the second was in August at Sedgwick County Park.

This month the board members will be meeting to discuss the 2021 schedule, and we will post updates here and on our Facebook pages.

April 2020 Meeting

  • Date: February 20, 2021
  • Program: Valentine’s and Welcome Back Meeting
  • Location: Countryside Christian Church, 1919 S. Rock Rd.  Wichita, 67207 (located on the west side of Rock a couple blocks south of Harry Street)
  • Might Want to Bring: Welsh Quilting Styles and Techniques for Today’s Quilts

Well, folks, we are finally getting together!  It’s been a long time and don’t feel like you have to come if you have reservations about meeting, but here’s the plan. (DISCLAIMER:  This is all subject to change.  You will be notified if there are any changes)

We will not be meeting at our usual location. Instead, Anita Brozik  has secured Countryside Christian Church (location above) with seating and tables spaced at least 6 feet apart for our safety.  MASKS ARE REQUIRED! Upon arrival at the church, enter though the third door from the east on the south side of the building

Activity:    Please bring a fat quarter (FQ) with a Valentine’s Day theme.  We will have an exchange for all who want to participate by bringing a FQ.  Fabric will be placed in plastic sandwich bags and placed in a large gift bag we will provide.

Two Gift Certificates will be raffled.  Tickets are $1 each or $5 for 6 tickets.  Bring a visitor and you both get one free ticket!

Bring your quilts for Show and Share.

More announcements coming!

Dues
:  The Board has decided not to charge dues for 2021.  We all paid for 2020 and know how that turned out.  We do encourage you to support any speakers or Zoom meetings for the year that may cost money.  We feel our speakers and workshops should be self-supporting and the more participation we have, the better.

We are looking to fill two Member at Large positions on our Board.  Please think about helping us out.  We need new ideas!

Tia has been featured in numerous quilting magazines, including Classic Modern Quilts, Fons&Porter’s Love of Quilting, Modern Patchwork, and Quilt Mania, just to name a few.

Morning Presentation

The morning presentation includes her process for creating one-of-a-kind quilts that range from traditional to whole-cloth to ultra modern pieces. Expect at minimum of 20 custom quilts to be featured during the presentation.

Afternoon Workshop

Tia will conduct a workshop from 1:00-4:00 p.m., Welsh Quilting Styles and Techniques for Today’s Quilts, covering:

  • history of Welsh quilting
  • acrylic templates for design
  • simple marking techniques

Students will leave class with marked and quilted samples and a handout filled with mix and match designs to try out on their next quilt.

The cost of the workshop is $45.00. If you haven’t registered and are interested contact brozikanita@gmail.com.

February 2020 Meeting

  • Program: Basics, Tips, and Hints
  • Speaker: Margaret Mans
  • Description:  Join us as Margaret shares information she has learned on her journey as a longarm quilter, from how to square backings and deal with wavy borders to favorite tools and pantos.

Basics, Tips and Hints

KLQ’s February meetings was a smash hit as long-time member Margaret Mans shared loads of information to a packed room of onlookers.

Margaret covered everything from thread types to squaring extra-wide backing fabrics, specialty tools and pantographs…the information was abundant, as was all the number of quilts she shared with the membership.

In addition to the Margaret’s presentation, February’s meeting included it’s regular show and share of projects made by the group.

Debbie Damitio shares her new addiction love of machine embroidery in quilting.

A guest appearance of the online web store Fat Quarter Shop’s original Bloom-Topia quilt was brought by Sondra Davison. The quilt is on tour to each blogger participating in the charity quilt along. More information is available here.

A new, fun feature of this month’s meeting was “bring a thread that best represents you.” Selected members brought a thread and shared a bit about themselves and why they chose their particular spool of thread. Earl Barrager brought his spool of “Las Vegas Gold.”

For a complete recap of the meeting, read the meeting minutes and check out lots more pictures on the gallery page.

April is a packed month. KLQ’s speaker/instructor is Tia Curtis – more about her and her class is available on the Next Meeting page.

In April, KLQ is also hitting the road again with an overnight bus tour shop hop. More about that on this page.

October 2019 Meeting

  • Program: Longarm Raw-Edge Applique
  • Speaker: Debbie Breer of Cotton Rhapsody Quilting

Our October speaker Debbie Breer owns Cotton Rhapsody Quilting in Assaria, Kansas.

Debbie has enjoyed designing and piecing quilts since her 4-H days.  She enjoys quilting for others and will bring a few quilts (including a mystery quilt) for a short trunk show.  The rest of her presentation will be an explanation of her technique of raw-edge applique using a longarm machine.  Debbie will be showing samples of how to do her technique.  It’s fun and easy!

August 2019 Meeting

  • Speaker: Diane Harris; Stash Bandit Quilting Shenanigans
